As a kid – and still today as an adult – I eat a lot of peanut butter, on toast, in sandwiches and in all kinds of other recipes. But, unlike when I was a child, it is often no longer safe to be sending kids to school with peanuts and nut products because of how common it is for kiddos to have severe food allergies. So what are some filling alternatives that veg families can send their wee ones off to school with? Beans to the rescue!

Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale

The vegan bake sale is part of the "Mom Rocks Shopping Expo" (link below). Admission to Moms Rock is free, and proceeds from the bake sale will support animal care at Wild at Heart Wildlife Refuge Centre! Come out for a tasty treat and perhaps find the perfect gift for mom! ** Please note the bake sale time is Saturday, May 6th, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or while supplies last. **

There is a tendency to think of vegetarianism and veganism as modern phenomenon. This sometimes leaves people to wonder what they could possibly cook for their loved ones of the veg*n persuasion. While it may be gaining popularity and media attention these days, vegetarianism is certainly not a new concept. While some cultural cuisines may contain more veg friendly dishes than others, even within the most meat and potatoes fare one may be able to find vegetarian (and even vegan) dishes that have been eaten all along.

Although Mardi Gras may bring New Orleans to mind, and Carnival may be associated with Rio de Janeiro, these February festivities occur across half the globe - almost everywhere that large groups of Catholic Christians have become established. This includes southern parts of the Netherlands, Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago, Italy and Angola, to name a few. Carnival and Mardi Gras mark the beginning of the Lenten period, when many Christian religious groups enter a period of fasting leading up to Easter.
